Carnaby Street's name traces back to a 17th-century house nobody quite remembers the story behind. But by 1965, that mystery didn't matter, the street had become the pulse of a new London: boutiques spilling onto the pavement, bands walking past on their way to a gig, the old rules of dressing quietly dying out.
